Honey Mustard Pretzel Turkey Burger

Growing up, one of my favorite snack combinations was pretzel sticks dipped in honey mustard.  They just make the most perfect pairing, and I could literally eat them all day.  I already created a recipe using The Abbot’s Butcher’s Turkey Burgers on here, and I wanted to create another one to show how versatile they truly are.  Combining the sweet and salt flavors of pretzel & honey mustard with these burgers is something truly magical and I’m so excited for you all to try it!

Let’s talk about the “meat” aspect of this, shall we?  Because I know a lot of you are probably wondering how something like this can even be plant based, and how to get it.  The Abbot’s Butcher makes the most incredible plant based meats I’ve ever come across. I’m so excited to be working with them, getting to create really fun recipes like this for you guys- and I stand by this brand 100%.  They use whole foods in their products, compared to a lot of their vegan meat competitors, which means this is a vegan meat you can eat on a more regular basis because it’s actually good for you!  On top of being healthy, they really are the closest product I’ve personally ever tried to the real thing.  The texture & taste are beyond spot on, and I really hope you guys all get to give them a try!  You can order directly from their website, which I’ll link again here.

These burgers are SO easy to make.  First off you’ll need to start by making your “honey” mustard, by mixing equal parts smooth dijon mustard, yellow mustard, and agave nectar until well combined.  You can adjust the amounts of each to your liking, some people like their honey mustard with a little more tang (adding more mustard), and some like it a little sweeter (adding more agave)… so it’s all up to you!  I personally like mine pretty sweet, so using equal parts of the 3 works out okay in my favor.

Once you have your sauce ready, we can go ahead and cook the burgers!  Preheat a skillet over medium high heat, and then add some oil to the pan.  Add in your Abbot’s Butcher Turkey Burgers and cook 1-2 minutes per side until slightly browned.  Now heres where the magic really happens… Once both sides are browned, take some of your honey mustard and baste both sides of the burger with it.  Allow the patties to cook another 1-2 minutes per side until the mustard gets nice and caramelized.  This is actually a trick that In-N-Out does to their animal style burgers (they just use yellow mustard though), and it gives such an amazing flavor & crunch to the patties.

Once your patties are done browning, you can add a slice of vegan cheese to each burger, pour a few tablespoons of water into the pan and cover IMMEDIATELY to steam the cheese and get it super melty.  Then add your burger to a lightly toasted pretzel bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion (or really any burger toppings you prefer), & a healthy serving of that honey mustard you made earlier.  Now you’re ready to dig in & enjoy this incredible burger!  I really hope you guys enjoy this recipe, and thanks again to The Abbot’s Butcher for sponsoring this post & giving me an outlet to create such amazing, fun recipes.

Ingredients

"Honey" Mustard

  • 1 cup Smooth Dijon Mustard
  • 1 cup Yellow Mustard
  • 1/2-1 cup Agave Nectar depending how sweet you like it

Misc. Ingredients

  • 1 package Abbot's Butcher Turkey Burgers if you can't find these, any veggie burger will work
  • 2 Pretzel Buns vegan friendly
  • 2 slices Vegan Cheese we used daiya cheddar slices
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Red Onion

Instructions

  1. You'll need to start out by making your sauce.  Mix all ingredients together until smooth, and adjust the agave nectar amount to your desired sweetness.  I like it pretty sweet so I usually add a whole cup, but you can start out with less and add more as you mix / taste.

  2. Take your turkey burgers out of the package, and add to a skillet over medium high heat with a few tablespoons of oil or vegan butter.  Cook your burger for about 1-2 minutes per side until a nice crust forms, and then brush some of your honey mustard on each side of the patty & allow to cook again on each side for an additional 1-2 minutes, until the mustard is nice and caramelized.

  3. Once your patties are cooked, add your cheese to the burgers, pour a few tablespoons of water into the pan and cover immediately to steam the cheese and get it nice and melty.

  4. Add your burgers to some lightly toasted pretzel buns with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and lots more of your honey mustard sauce. Then dig in & enjoy!
